  1. The LG recorder arrived in good order and has been working very well.

Set up was easy and functionality simple to follow.

  2. We just ordered our 5th, yes 5th RC897T. While we’ve never owned a recorder with a more disjointed, hard to follow manual the performance of the equipment makes up for it. I suspect the manual and menus were laid out by an engineer so operation is not intuitive. But, once you get passed the clunky menu commands a few times, you’ll love the quality of your recordings. Of course, you can’t copy original tapes and disks. Well duh, it’s against the law. Get over it.

  3. DVD Recorder was delivered in good shape and on time. I’ve had it for two months now and still isn’t easy to operate. I’m now in the process of returning it for repair as it started pausing as you watched a program. It also recorded the program alright but when you play it back sometimes it pauses every twenty seconds for about five seconds and then resumes playing. Other times it plays the disc alright. The first time I contacted customer service I was told that that wasn’t possible. They had me try to reset the recorder. That didn’t help. When I got back to customer service they are now having me return it for repair.

  4. It was a nice product out of the box. However, after less than 6 months of very light usage I’m having these problems with it:

    1. whenever there’s a DVD in it and the unit is turned on, it seem to be spinning the disc all the time.

    2. after playing the DVD for around 40 minutes the unit freezes and shuts down.

Please note that I’ve been using only the DVD, mostly for recording and playing TV programs.

Now based on the “un-success stories” I’ve read on the web about LG’s customer service, I am not going to spend $100 more to send the unit in for repairs, just to get it back in the exact same condition it was in when I’ve sent it in. I’ll use it till it dies and then I’ll dump it in the trash. I have no experience with their customer service as they have not responded to the email I’ve sent.

The probability I’ll buy another LG product is 0. No matter how slick its design might be or what feature set it has.

  5. This was one of the few units that had what I wanted… DVR/VCR, tuner and most importantly a USB connection in front capable of watching DIVX movies from a flash drive. I was in love with this machine until about a year into owning it, the DVD door would open and close (as someone here mentioned) as if the machine was possessed. Then I couldn’t shut the machine off. It would freeze up and I would need to pull the plug out numerous times. Lo and behold, this is mentioned under trouble shooting. Well if this is a defect that they know about then why are they releasing it into the market??? GRRRR Now I need to go shopping again for a new DVR
